Raffles Health Testing

You should never purchase a crossbred pup without health testing on the parents. Take a look below at our extensive testing below.

We carry out all the recommended health testing as suggested for the specific breed (Kennel Club). Please note there are different health testing requirements for the different type of Spaniels and also the different Poodles, toy, miniature and standard. So this is why you will read that some tests are done by some breeders and not others, it all depends on what type of spaniel or poodle they breed from.  http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/services/public/breed/    Although we do hip score our miniature poodles it is not a requirement from the Kennel Club for poodle assured breeders to do for poodle breeding.

Raffles health testing is as below. We only breed from the show cocker spaniel and the miniature poodle. For Cavapoos we breed from the miniature poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

  • PRA Clear – not just by DNA but each individual dog has been tested with a certificate, please note only one of the parents needs to be clear for the pups NOT to be affected. So information sites which say both parents is incorrect information. You can view this here. http://www.optigen.com/opt9_test_prcd_pra.html

  • BVA Eye Tested – BVA eye tests check for cataracts and other common eye issues.

  • Mums/Pups Heart Testing – We regular heart test all our Mums. (English Show Cocker Spaniels,Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Cavachons) and most importantly our pups have two full health checks and any heart murmurs are picked up well before they leave us too. A pup can still have a heart murmur if both parents are completely fine. So checking both is crucial. Our records of our Mums tested are kept on site and signed by our vet.

  • Our Cavalier King Charles Mums - Are health tested Dry Eye Curly Coat and AMS - copies come with your pup

  • English Show Cocker Mums - Tested for AMS, FN and PRA

  • Show Cocker Spaniels Dads. FN tested and PRA clear.

  • Miniature Poodles are hip scored with an excellent low score. The lower the result the better, it is scored out of 106. If you are showing or breeding Poodles KC Club recommend a mean score 10/11 out of 106, which is extremely low, this is for poodle to poodle KC show breeding, our current poodle sires range from 5 through to 15, which is out of 106. The average is 16 for the miniature poodle, and the mean is 10/11. If we ever have a sire with a too high hip score, it does not become one of our main studs. To view the average hip scores of all breeds see below.

  • http://www.dogslovethem.co.uk/Breed-Hip-Scores.html Please note the Kennel Club Assured Breeders it is NOT a requirement to hip score the miniature poodle, under 130 poodles in the UK have ever been tested by the BVA for hip scoring which is very low.

The beauty of a hybrid dog is when you cross two pedigree dogs,  you can/may limit/remove the common health problems commonly seen in a pedigree.
