Common Mistakes with Cockapoos

One Cockapoo is not the same as another Cockapoo, and below are the common mistakes people make when selecting their forever Cockapoo. We hope this helps you to make informed decisions. Whether you have a Raffles Cockapoo or not, we are here to make sure people have the correct information, so this website and also www.fortheloveofcockapoos.co.uk will give you all the correct information you need so you are not misled.

Selecting your Cockapoo

Selecting your forever Cockapoo is not the same as selecting a pedigree puppy. A pedigree is a stereo type puppy, you know what it is going to look like. Other than making your selection from a litter, you are pretty sure the overall look,  as the pups breed true to their parents.

Selecting a cross-breed is quite the opposite.  We receive so many calls from people who sadly made the wrong decision selecting their Cockapoo, ranging from the dog being to hyper, as it is bred from the working lines, and although still lovely cockapoos, they can be quite demanding, to straight coated looking just like a spaniel, not a curl or wave insight, often referred to as the silkie Cockapoo., same thing applies, they are still lovely dogs curl or no curl,  but it may not be what you wanted.

We recommend you read this   Why you should never select a Cockapoo Pup before it is 6/7 weeks of age.

Not Meeting Dad.

We know meeting Mum is important, but Dad is 50% of the genetic makeup of your Cockapoo.

So many mistakes are made by not seeing Dad or doing your homework first.

Dad maybe aggressive, have Cataracts,  be very old. Dad maybe very faded and his lines carry the fading gene.  Dad may not have been health tested and importantly what size is Dad? See some of the mistakes people have made at the below link.

All Cockapoos can fade or change colour slightly, some do and some don't, the fading gene means your dog will be all over silver no colour normally by the time it is year. Fading or lightening can come from "roan" this is not silver. No two Cockapoo's are the same.

Is a Companion Breed right for you?

As lovely as they are there are some things you need to know about having a companion breed in your life.

Cockapoos, Cavapoos, and most cross breeds are a companion breed, this means they love to be with you, love company, and are not good at being left on their own. we go out of our way in all our pre pup hub support, and at handover of our pups to tell you how important it is to fully socialise your pup from day, things like pups classes are ideal, but as much as it is important to fully socialise, you have to also teach your companion breed it is fine to be on its own. Leaving pup from day one is important as well as socialisation, leave for 2 hours at a time and get pup being use to being on its own is vital you do this from a young age. If not you will end up with a doggie that cannot be left. They are susceptible to separation issues if you do not teach pup early age it is fine to be left on its own for small periods of time. We shall prepare your pup here, we have a full socialisation plan in place, but when a pups leaves us it is for you to ensure you take the correct advice and implement it at your end.

Grooming - Most cross breeds are popular because of allergies, this means they have a thicker coat, and will need to be groomed every 6 weeks or done by yourself at home, when the thicker adult coat comes in, unless you maintain it, the coat will get matted, so we advise you go to your groomers every 6 weeks.

if you are fine and prepared for the above to put the effort in, then there is nothing quite like having a companion bred to share your life with, they are funny, loyal, and very loving in nature.

Common areas of misconception are:-

  • Which F type. Cockapoos come in various F types. You can read here about the different F types. www.fortheloveofcockapoos.co.uk

  • The difference between the working cocker and show cocker cross Cockapoo - this makes a huge difference in the energy of the dog.

  • If you are out at a work all day a Cockapoo will NOT be suitable for you. No companion breed can be left on its own, we say no longer than 4 hours

  • ALL Cockapoos are suitable for those with allergies. Not true, you need the right coat type.

  • You should purchase from licensed breeder that health tests both adults. There is NO official Cockapoo Club in the UK, the only official club is the Kennel Club, and you can now also register your Cockapoo at the Kennel Club. There are clubs claiming to be “official” cockapoo clubs of the UK, and they also charge to vet breeders and then list them as approved on their site, they are breeders themselves who organise these official clubs. Please be careful about this and only take it on face value. By all means visit some of the "recommeded breeders" we did when we set off on our travels. Raffles are not part of any paid/unpaid scheme for approval. We are fully licensed.
